What makes expert data worth paying for

Credentials aren't enough. The expert data that improves models comes from reasoning, honest disagreement and a review process you can audit.

Two experts reviewing written answers together at a table

AI teams now pay experts (doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists) to train and test their models. The rates are much higher than for traditional labelling, so the obvious question is what makes that data worth it.

From our work vetting experts for AI projects, the answer comes down to four things.

1. Reasons, not just rankings

A thumbs up on answer B tells a model very little. A clinician explaining why B is safer (it checks kidney function before dosing; A doesn’t) teaches the model something it can reuse. The most useful expert data includes written reasoning, so ask for it in every task.

2. Disagreement is information

When two qualified experts disagree, averaging their scores throws away the most interesting signal. Good projects keep both views, flag the item, and send it to a third reviewer or a rubric update. Disagreement often marks where a model, or a guideline, is genuinely uncertain.

3. The right expert, not just a credentialed one

“Licensed physician” isn’t one skill. An emergency doctor, an oncologist and a pharmacist will judge the same answer differently, and all can be right within their field. Matching experts by specialty, country and language matters as much as checking credentials. The same goes for engineers: a strong Python developer isn’t automatically a good reviewer of Rust concurrency code.

4. Quality you can audit

Ask how quality is measured, not just promised. Look for a second expert reviewing a sample of every batch, agreement rates reported each week, and a clear route for flagging bad items. If a vendor can’t show you this, you can’t tell good data from confident noise.

How we approach it at Kodiva

Every expert in our network passes a structured AI interview in their own field before they touch a task. We match by specialty, country and language, and a second expert reviews a sample of the work. Our network spans 40,000+ experts in 60+ countries, which lets us staff specialised projects quickly.

If you’re planning an evaluation or fine-tuning project and want to test the quality first, send us a small sample set. We’ll return it with expert answers and a quality report.
